Work/Life Balance

My husband will laugh that I’m writing this blog post as he’s pretty sure I’ve never heard this phrase let alone know how to put it into practice.  In our 21st Century lifestyles where we can “work from anywhere”, it can definitely be difficult to unplug.  Honestly, I have my work email on my phone and I check it regularly…….okay, constantly.  I’ve deluded myself into thinking that by responding to email from the time I get up in the morning until the time I crash at night, I’m saving myself time and staying on top of things.  In reality, I think I’m probably less effective and efficient with these messages than I would be if I just waited until I’m back at work.  I have all my resources handy when I’m at my computer and I’m usually just working from my imperfect memory when I respond from my phone.

Regardless! We need to be able to add our work email addresses to our district devices even though the district in no way expects us to have them on our personal devices.  So this tutorial will walk you through doing that.  Please note, this tutorial was created with the new iOS 11.1.2 update.  The biggest change that came with iOS 11 is we now have “Accounts and Passwords” in our Settings app whereas we used to just setup our email in “Mail”.  The “Mail” settings are now just that, settings – more to come on that another day.  To add or remove accounts from our iOS devices, we now use the new “Accounts and Passwords”.  Though not included in my tutorial here, this new setting option also gives you a chance to store passwords you use for different online accounts such that they auto-fill on specified websites when accessed.  Storing passwords like this is definitely something you want to avoid if students have access to your device at any point.  Even if you’re only letting them use an app or two on your iPad, they could potentially view private information to which they shouldn’t have access if they end up using Safari at all.  If you have additional questions about how to keep these things safe, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Happy Thanksgiving to each of you! I hope you have a lovely holiday break!

Google Photos: Creating Shared Albums

To make this video, I did some extensive “app-smashing” – I used Pixl on the iPad to create the image you see at the beginning and end of the video.  Then I used iOS 11’s new screen-cast tool to take video of the process you use to make a shared album in the iPad app Google Photos (same process works on the iPhone app).  Finally, I put it all together and recorded my voice over the top using the iPad app Clips.  I need to continue working on this conglomeration of tools as I had to re-record my voice in Clips after already recording my voice in the screen-cast.  The audio portion of my screen-cast didn’t come in correctly on the Clips app.  I’ll update this post if I find a solution to this issue.
